eeacms/waterhub-backend-devel repository overview

Copernicus Thematic Water Hub Backend

Plone 6 backend for WaterHub, based on the generic EEA eeacms/plone-backend image and configured by the eea.waterhub.policy add-on.

Requirements

  • Docker with Docker Compose
  • GNU Make

Supported backend stack

  • EEA backend image: eeacms/plone-backend:6.1.5-1
  • Plone: 6.1.5
  • Python: 3.12
  • eea.volto.policy: 14.2

The image tag and Python/Plone versions are kept aligned with the published EEA backend image. Add-on versions installed on top of it are pinned in constraints.txt.

Start developing

Build and start the development container:

make develop
make start

The development container stays idle so that Plone can be started interactively, as in other EEA backend projects:

docker compose exec backend bash
./docker-entrypoint.sh start

On its first interactive start, the entrypoint creates a Plone site using the Volto distribution and applies eea.waterhub.policy:default. Site state persists in the named Docker volume waterhub-backend-data.

The frontend can then be run from the sibling project:

cd ../waterhub-frontend
make relstorage

Stop the backend without deleting its data:

make stop

Delete containers and local site data explicitly:

make clean

Images

make develop builds waterhub-backend:develop with mxdev support. make build builds the production-style waterhub-backend:latest image.

The base image is configurable for both builds:

make develop PLONE_IMAGE=eeacms/plone-backend:<approved-tag>
make build PLONE_IMAGE=eeacms/plone-backend:<approved-tag>

The default is the released EEA image eeacms/plone-backend:6.1.5-1. Override it only when deliberately testing a newer approved image.

Policy development

make develop clones the policy repository into sources/eea.waterhub.policy. This nested checkout is ignored by the backend repository and keeps its own Git history. The development image also installs the package through mxdev, while Compose mounts the local checkout over that editable source. Edit it directly; pushing to GitHub is not required.

After Python or ZCML changes, stop the interactive process with Ctrl-C and run ./docker-entrypoint.sh start again. Run tests and checks from another shell:

make test
make lint
make format
make shell

Commit policy changes from its own checkout:

cd sources/eea.waterhub.policy
git status
git add .
git commit
git push

The development image is defined in develop/, which is also its build context (cd develop && docker build .). It extends the production image and adds:

  • develop/requirements.txt: development-only Python packages, kept separate from the production requirements.txt;
  • develop/mx.ini: add-ons checked out by mxdev as editable sources under sources/.

Re-run make develop only after changing Python dependencies, develop/mx.ini, or the development Dockerfile. GenericSetup profile changes must also be reapplied to an existing site through Site Setup, or implemented as an upgrade step.

Released backend images use the policy version pinned in constraints.txt.

Policy quality gates

The backend builds a self-contained test image containing the policy source. No running development container or host bind mount is required:

make lint
make test
make package
make ci

make ci runs the policy repository's canonical make ci command and copies JUnit, XML/LCOV, and HTML coverage reports to xunit-reports-current/.

The equivalent Docker commands, suitable for both developers and Jenkins, are:

make checkout
docker build --build-arg PLONE_IMAGE=eeacms/plone-backend:6.1.5-1 \
  --file Dockerfile.test --tag waterhub-backend-test:latest .
docker run --rm waterhub-backend-test:latest make lint
docker run --rm waterhub-backend-test:latest make test-ci
docker run --rm waterhub-backend-test:latest make package
docker run --rm waterhub-backend-test:latest make ci

On a clean checkout, POLICY_REF selects the policy branch, tag, or commit to test; it defaults to main. An existing editable policy checkout is preserved and its current working tree is baked into the image.

Release

See RELEASE.md for release preparation and the infrastructure values that must be confirmed before enabling Jenkins publishing.

Secret scanning

The Betterleaks GitHub Action scans the current repository content on every push and pull request using .gitleaks.toml. When it finds a potential secret, the check fails and uploads a redacted betterleaks-report artifact.

Optional failure emails require these repository or organization secrets:

  • SMTP_URL
  • SMTP_PORT (defaults to 25)
  • SMTP_EMAIL
  • SMTP_PASSWORD (optional when the SMTP server needs no authentication)

For a real secret, remove it, rotate it, and move it to the approved secret store. For a verified false positive, add #betterleaks:allow on the same line and explain the exception in the pull request. Never allowlist a real secret.
